'ON BECOMING' BY TOKE MAKINWA - A SUMMARY

I'm sure a vast number of us have heard of the book 'On Becoming' by the popular OAP Toke Makinwa.

This book consists of 14 chapters with each chapter depicting stages of her family life and her married life with Maje Ayida

Toke Makinwa starts off by re-living the moment where she finds out about the pregnancy of her ex-husbands side chick Anita. She also reveals how nonchalant he was towards her latest discovery! He was asked to leave and instead of being sober he requested for food, ate and left! Nawa!

She brings memories from her childhood for the readers to understand some of her life decisions/mistakes. Ranging from her lifestyle, her parents jobs, their deaths and her adopted parents.

Toke gives us a 'ride' through her first meeting with Maje Ayida, their relationship, his numerous side chicks, their breakups, their marriage and eventually their divorce.

In this book, Toke dedicates a whole chapter to a particular 'constant Side Chick'; Anita (The other woman).  It turns out that Anita has always been in the picture even while Toke and Maje were still in the dating phase. According to her, Maje says Anita is the girlfriend while Toke is the wife.

It is also seen that Maje insists on not having a child with her because of 'business' but goes ahead to have two baby mamas...smh...such! She tells us how she contacted STI from him and he denies it even in the face of evidence (messages exchanged between him and his side piece Anita).

It is clearly seen that Toke Makinwa went through hell and back in the hands of Maje Ayida. We see the hustles, the emotional trauma, the 'trying to be the perfect one' (she even bleached her skin!), the tolerance she had until she eventually said 'enough is enough'.

Well, now we know not all is as it seems and i am sure we ladies must have learnt a thing or two from this book. I hope the guys did too tho.
